    The new storm water general permit requires MS4s to change local business practices, encourage installation of residential BMPs, work with lake associations to improve lakes, manage pet waste, yard waste, deicing chemicals and other small scale storm water management measures. How will you target audiences? What messages are effective, and how will you get those messages to your audiences?

    Even the strongest message won’t deliver itself! In this workshop you will learn how the pros plan their campaigns, measure their accomplishments, and do it even better next time. The More Than a Message series provides big concepts and practical tips you need to plan and carry out your effort.

    Part 1. How do you plan for success? In this workshop, you will learn to distinguish successful and unsuccessful communication efforts -- and how to draw up the best plan possible for the resources you have available to you.

    Part 2. How do you reach people that you don't already know? In this session, we will explore how to research your target audience using mass media, direct marketing, and online techniques to find your audience and deliver your message.

    Part 3. What happens after they hear from you? Learn how you can use "the slope" to predict and measure the number of people who notice and respond to your message. Discover what it takes to turn simple actions into big steps that really make a difference.

    Eric founded Water Words That Work, LLC and oversees all the company’s client projects. Eric has more than 15 years experience planning and carrying out issue advocacy, fundraising, and behavior change campaigns. Eric is a sought-after speaker for environmental, marketing, and technology conferences. He has appeared on CNN and been quoted in the New York Times. Eric sits on the editorial committee for the Center for Watershed Protection, and serves on the board of directors for the Green Media Toolshed.
