With the growing number of English-language learners in classrooms nationwide, an English Language Learners (ELLs) certificate can help you make educational decisions to build your confidence and skills working with them.

You'll gain valuable knowledge and skills you can use in your classroom from day one of the certificate, including:

  • Ensuring your grade-level content is accessible to ELLs by learning how to write, integrate, and assess academic language objectives into your teaching
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition theories
  • Understanding cultural responsiveness for ELLs and their families

Start dates and application deadlines

We review applications on a rolling basis, meaning you can apply and start your English Language Learners certificate at three separate times throughout the year. We recommend applying at least six weeks before the term you want to start to ensure your spot.

English Language Learners Certificate program format

Hamline's English Language Learners in the Mainstream Classroom certificate is offered entirely online. Some individual classes may meet synchronously online (at a set scheduled time) on a weekday evening. 

Time to complete your English Language Learners Certificate

The typical time to complete the certificate is 9-12 months, depending on how many classes you take per term.

English Language Learners in the Mainstream courses

You’ll finish your certificate in four courses.

  • GED 7888: English Learners in the Mainstream (2 credits)
  • ESL 8110: Language and Society (4 credits)
  • ESL 7753: Testing & Evaluation of English Language Learners (2 credits)
  • ESL 7770: Praxis in TESOL (4 credits)

How to apply to the ELL Certificate

Applying to the English Language Learners program is simple and only required if this is the first certificate you’ve applied for at Hamline or if you are not enrolled in another Hamline School of Education degree or certificate program.

  • Online application (no fee)
  • Official transcript of a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 2.5 from a regionally accredited college or university.
    • This should be sent directly from the institution to Graduate Admission or provided in a sealed, signed envelope. Official electronic transcripts should be emailed from the institution to gradprog@hamline.edu.
    • You do not have to supply transcripts for courses taken at Hamline University.

Apply your certificate toward a master’s degree

Enrolling in a certificate program is a great way to experience what the master's programs at Hamline are like. With the English Learners Certificate, you’ll earn credits that you can apply toward the following Hamline master's degrees:
