My original issue back then was a matter of windows management within NB,
but I learned to "live with it" and it hasn't been a problem for me since.

I don't quite understand the problem.  If you open up another document
(either by creating a new file or opening up an already-existing file) then
that "untitled" document disappears.  So I don't see why one would need to
have no document opened.
