Cut and paste

I am in the process of writing a paper that started with a series of notes
with citations.  I am now transferring these to the body of a final version
within a framework.  I am sure this has been discussed recently but cannot
find the thread.  It turns out (vers 8z) that, when I do a dynamic update
after cutting and pasting, the bibliography does not appear.  I get a
message that there are no citations to update - this despite the fact that
the footnoted citations have all transferred.  What is the trick?
