NOT NB!!: WinXPL with the bit between its teeth

Colleagues,

I'll be out of the country by the time anyone reads this, but I'll still 
need help when I get back in April. My apologies for the off-List appeal.

WinXP gives me hell. Suddenly, it gets the bit in its teeth and opens every 
single application it can on its own initiative, furiously and flat out, 
when I'm working. I have to stop till it has completed its mad frenzy, and 
then close down what I don't want. It does not seem to do any harm to any 
application or data as far as I can see, but this is unacceptable 
behaviour - I lose complete control over the PC.

The fundis at the local supplier who sold m WinXP (and they are heavy-duty 
guys as they service major industry including the Univ'y - are unable to 
explain or advise.

Has anyone any ideas??

My apologies also to the people who offered help with my scanner. I'm afraid 
that in all cases the answer is nix. The websites I was referred to simply 
don't work.
