NOT NB: old scanner under XP

Forgive the non-NB appeal for help...

Is anyone using a Primax Colorado Direct 9600 scanner under WinXP?

Problem: I turned 70. My sons gave me an iPod as a present, so I can listen 
to Vivaldi, Britten, Beethoven and Sibelius wherever. Oh, it's 
wonderful.....But I had till that moment been a happy W98 user, and 
everything worked, but I had to buy WinXP to use the iPod. So I bought 
WinXP.

Oh dear.....

Result..... everything but the iPod has caused trouble. I've managed to get 
my printer going, sort of, and replaced my modem; but my scanner has become 
unusable as Primax don't support Win XP. I googled and found there are 
supposed to be freeware downloadable scanners, but I can't download them - 
the sites run dead.

Has anyone any suggestions? I so don't want to buy a new scanner for such a 
reason....
