Give a look at a Mac.
For under $ 2,000 you'll find the best laptop I have ever had. Battery life it's no more
a matter of hh:mm:ss _ It is a real world battery life: you can keep working and
working, for hours.
VirtualPC from Microsoft runs smoothly and I still have my old DOS / Windows software and
data at hand. NotaBene included.
Ciao.

Steve,
I find my Lenovo tablet pc (X-41) to
last the longest in my experience. The normal battery (4-cell) reliably
lasts 2 hrs, 45 min, maybe 3 hours. The optional 8-cell can go for 6 hours.
I have not found the keyboard to be problematic with NB. However, you can
normally activate the desired NB key combination by also pressing simultaneously
the Windows key that sometimes comes with laptop keyboards.

Gail,
I'm also looking into replacing my laptop (Toshiba A10) and would be very
interested if you would pass on any of the wisdom acquired in your search.
I love my Toshiba, but several of the NB shortcuts (esp involving function
keys) cause strange things to happen. I realize that some manufacturers
build their own shortcuts into their keyboards and so it would be good
to
have a heads up on that.
I'm looking for something under $2,000 that has a decent battery life.
Any suggestions (I'll look into the Dell) would be greatly welcome.
Steve Martin.

Dear all -
I just want to take a moment to thank those of you who responded to my
note
about buying a new computer, and report back on what happened. For
several
reasons, including a nice academic discount, I decided to get the Dell
XPS
M140. This is the one with Windows XP Media Center as the OS. After
all of
two days (almost), so far so good...
