I'm forwarding this answer I got from Joachim Linder to the list, since it
might be of interest to others. I've also reported the problem to
TechSupport and hope that they can come up with a solution. Meanwhile, I'll
follow Joachim's advise and will avoid using any of the formatting
dialogues. It is a problem though ...

I have wondered about similar problems which seem not specific to late Betas
of 8 (SWS w, x, y): changing formats or inserting new formats (headers
mainly) often leads NB to erase (randomly?) formatting information at the
beginning of the document. It seems related to the place where NB puts new
formatting information. My workaround: I create formatting information of
this kind in an empty document and insert it into the existing doc. via
cut-and-paste in Show-Codes-Mode (and never right at the top of the
document). So I came to avoid using Format - Document - Overview - Edit.
