I also have Copernic. While I don't use it a lot, when I'm scrambling to
find something ("I know I wrote something on this somewhere, but where was
it?"), it always comes up with the answer.
At first it is somewhat computer intensive as it indexes your entire
drive.
But once done, it keeps up the indexing of new stuff without you even
noticing.

At the suggestion of someone on our list (reaching 60 this
year - circuits overloaded), I bought Copernic Desktop Search
(http://www.copernic.com/en/store/index.html) some time ago,
and have found it quite helpful, and quick, for some of what
you want. (It presently costs $30 for the personal version,
and they also have educational discounts, if you look around).
The program indexes your harddrive's files, in the
background, when you're not doing anything on the computer,
and then when you search for text (in very many formats), it
can find it quickly.
You might look it over.
