Re: Backup

I own Second Copy but generally no longer use it. As far as I know there are no technical problems with the program, but I found myself messing up the logic from time to time and forgetting exact what was going to take priority, what would be deleted, what kind of synchronization I was doing, etc.  I *think* Second Copy can be fairly dangerous with some types of synchronization... not because it malfunctions, but because the user may not fully realize the implications of the settings, especially when the backups are first being created.

In place of Second Copy I have been using ADCS (www.heatsoft.com) --- "Advanced Directory Comparison & Synchronization". I make far fewer mistakes with ADCS. In fact I can't remember messing anything up with it in the two years I have used it.  It has the supreme advantage *for me* of actually showing what it will do, which files will of overwritten, which direction files will be copied, etc. That makes it easy to pick up on oddities that have crept into the system.

Heatsoft seems fairly responsive to user requests, as well.  They have a new "Automatic Synchronizer" that I haven't tried.

Hello Michael,

Be careful!!! ?I had a bad experience w. the program and am somewhat paranoid. After running the programming once some of my very important research folders w. tons of data in them disappeared completely!!!  Not sure why. So, --be sure that you have your data in another format. (On another drive, tape, etc.) I  in fact did so it was not a disaster.

During the discussion of backup methods a few months back, several members of the list again mentioned the program, Second Copy. I got it last week and you were right: it makes regular backups easy. For daily and weekly backups, I use a couple of flash drives and Second Copy set to manual. A snap. Thanks for the suggestion.
