David,
Many thanks for taking the trouble to help.
I did consider the film template and perhaps you are right and I shall have
to return to it, adopting your helpful changes.
Perhaps I'm wrong (I don't have the Chicago Manual of Style at hand), but I
felt somehow that the elements should be something like this:
title of the episode, ?Palestine 1946: l?Angleterre prise au piege" in
inverted commas (hence Short title field)
main title of the series _Histoire parallèle_ italicized (put in the
Anthology field, though perhaps it could be the equivalent of a general
series of books I thought)
Also, I thought that _Histoire parallèle_ could do with a descriptor:
"Documentary series" (or similar). But the Series field has no
descriptor (so this led to more hesitation and fiddling...)
I also played with adding the descriptor <episode no. 339> without being
entirely sure that 'episode' is the most felicitous choice of term for it.
Cheysson, Claude was put in the Short title contributor field: using the
<discussant> role. I also played with <commentary by>, but your <guest
commentator> is perhaps best.
Arte (the name of the Franco-German TV station) went into the publisher
field (though in formatting this did not seem quite right.
And I found no way to get the style to use the full date of the broadcast:
3 February 1996.
By the time of my posting to the list, my fiddling with the record was left
at this (using the Chicago Manual):
In-Text Marc Ferro, narr., ?Palestine 1946: l?Angleterre prise au piege /
Palästina 1946: England in der Klemme,? commentary by Marc Ferro and Claude
Cheysson, in Histoire parallèle / Die Woche vor 50 Jahren, Documentary
series (Arte, 1996),##.
Reference Ferro, Marc, narrator. ?Palestine 1946: l?Angleterre prise
au piege / Palästina 1946: England in der Klemme.? Commentary by Marc
Ferro, and Claude Cheysson. In Histoire parallèle / Die Woche vor 50
Jahren. Documentary series. Arte, 1996.
I would be grateful for your comments and quite happy for a push to end the
niggling doubts and hesitation.
Again, all my thanks for your kind suggestions,
Steve

a few queries: I assume you've tried using the 'film' template and that
you're using the preview panel?; which citation style are you using (and
how much choice in the matter do you have)?; what precisely have you found
to be unsatisfactory?
Using the 'film' template, and with the 'in-text style set' to Chicago
Manual of Style short form and the 'reference-list style' set to Chicago
Manual of Style footnote/endnote, I achieved the following:
in-text = Ferro 3 February 1996, ###
ref-list = Marc Ferro, narr., _Palestine 1946 l?Angleterre Prise au
Piege_, episode no. 339, with Claude Cheysson, Histoire Parallèle (1996, 3
February)
(I also tried one or two other formats, such as _American Anthropologist_
and _Journal of Popular Culture_, just to see how they handled the
relationship between episode title and series name.)
The positioning of information in fields was as follows:
Director/Producer <role> = Ferro, Marc <narrator> (assuming he's also the
director, one could use <dir> after <narrator>, but the various citation
styles will only pick up the former, whereas if you edit the
angle-bracketed items so that you have <narrator & dir> both will be
picked up; the rule of thumb, when it comes to adding items not included
in Ibidem's ready-made drop-down lists, is to base your categories on the
abbreviations used in such list, so as to allow Ibidem's autoformatting to
proceed with minimal disruption [see also below, under Cast])
Year = 3 February 1996
Title = Palestine 1946 l'Angleterre prise au piege
Desc = episode no. 339 (note that 'episode' seems not to be available in
the drop-down list, so I've simply used one of the 'x no. _' items from
the list and substituted the word 'episode', taking my cue from the
information you supplied)
Cast = Cheysson, Claude <discussant> (note that I've used 'discussant'
from the drop-down list, as it seemed appropriate, but I could have used
your description, in lower case and within angle-brackets, thus: <guest
commentator> and the citation style would have picked that up instead)
Series = Histoire parallèle (if one wanted to emphasise the series title
over the episode title, one might choose to place this as the first
element of the 'Title' field instead, followed by either a full stop, a
dash or a colon to separate it from the episode title)
I hope this is of some assistance.

I would be grateful for suggestions with another Ibidem brainteaser: How
best to distribute the elements concerning a broadcast in a TV
documentary series among the Ibidem fields.
The title of the documentary series: Histoire parallèle
Presented (and no doubt directed by): Marc Ferro
Title of the broadcast: Palestine 1946 l'Angleterre prise au piege
Guest commentator: Claude Cheysson
Broadcast/episode #339
Broadcast date: 3 February 1996
I've fiddled with it, trying a number of options, none of which has been
satisfactory.
Many thanks,
Steve
