Hi everybody,
I have set up a chat forum for all of us Notabene users. Its advantages are:
1. The chat software is very small and very easy to download and use. You
don't even have to install the software (it does not need, nor does it
affect your registry file). You can simply run it from a floppy disk if
you so desire. You will probably want to install it however, just for
convenience.
2. It will enable us to talk with each other live in groups, or to
individuals privately.
3. It will help us help each other resolve problems much faster. We can
try out suggestions right on the spot to see if they work, and ask more
questions if they don't work. We use this software on a programming list I
am on, and it is very helpful.
4. If NB tech support can be persuaded to log on at a set time
periodically, it will enable overseas NB users to get live tech support
without the high cost of international long distance phone calls.
Potential disadvantages:
1. It is not easy (so far as I know) to archive messages, so some messages
would be more permanently useful if sent to the list. It will definitely
not take the place of this e-mail list. If I were forced to choose between
this e-mail list or a chat forum, I would rather have the e-mail list. But
if we so desire we can have both.
2. I am not sure how long I can host it on my computer; eventually it will
probably have to move to someone else's server.
Nevertheless, it is up and running right now. You can download the program
from:
http://www.safeworlds.com
Here's what you need to logon:
World Name: NB Writers
Username: Guest
Password: pass
Once you log on, click on the accounts group, and give:
1. Your complete real name.
2. Your email address.
3. A short user name you would like to use.
I'll respond by setting up your account, and sending you (by e-mail) a
password. Log back in and change your password if you want.
If after a few weeks we decide the chat forum is not useful, I will simply
take it offline.
Louis
