I am looking for an update program
that will check which files
have changed on either computer and will update both by the later
date.
I want to do this not necessarily on the whole computer, but on
specific
folders. Finally, I would like to do it via a USB crossed cable (I
am translating the word "crossed" from Hebrew. I am not sure
about the
term).
I use Laplink 2000, which does exactly what you describe. You create what
it calls 'Exchange Agents' to update specific folders and/or combinations
of folders. You can include or exclude categories of files (e.g., you can
exclude all .BAK and .TMP files from the copy, or you can copy only *.NB
files). You can include or exclude subfolders, and you can have the
Exchange Agents run a preview of what they'll do (so that you can exclude
files if you want).
It will also 'Synchronise folders' - copy newer files with the same name
in a folder in one computer over those in a folder in the other, leaving
all other files untouched; or 'Clone folders', a more
extreme operation, which replaces all files in folder A in computer 1
with those in folder A in computer 2. And it will do remote printing and
all sorts of things that I don't use.
Oh, and you can get a USB cable for it. With USB it's very
fast.
My version is 2 or 3 years old. I think the latest is now at least
Laplink 2002.
But other list users probably have their own favourite linking
software. I think Norton has, or had, one called PC Anywhere, which
Dorothy Day recommended.
