OT: Update software

Dear NBers,
I have a vague memory that this has been discussed, but I don't know the
terms to look it up in the archive.
I am finally making the move from being a one-computer person to being a
two-computer person. I have a new office desktop and I am getting a new
laptop. I am looking for an update program that will check which files
have changed on either computer and will update both by the later date.
I want to do this not necessarily on the whole computer, but on specific
folders. Finally, I would like to do it via a USB crossed cable (I
am translating the word "crossed" from Hebrew. I am not sure about the
term).
Does anybody remember such a discussion here?
BTW: in 6.1 you no longer have to drag an icon if NB is active. You just
click on it and NB knows what to do.
