you're dead right, Mark, the record number is entered when a record is cited, and
any alteration to it causes the 'update citations' option to point to the material
that matches the new/altered number. Open a document, switch to expanded mode,
change a record number, switch back to normal mode, invoke 'update citations' and
see what happens!
