RE: File Open buglet

Thanks, Robert.

>> Win2K messes up when I try to use a truncated name ---> cd XyWrit~1
>That's not a correct command, if the target ("Xywrite III+") is a
subdirectory
of "XyWrite". Assuming your current location is dir \XyWrite, to ChDir to
"XyWrite III+" in both DOS and NB, command:
>cd .\XYWRIT~1

This doesn't work for me, either. Do you mean to suggest that I've been
doing this sort of thing incorrectly for years without noticing a problem
before? I don't think I've ever used the .\ form!

>Also, double-check that the short name of the subdir really is XYWRIT~1; if
you
have, say, another subdir of "XyWrite" called "XyWrite IV" (or filename[s]
beginning XYWRIT...), they won't all be called XYWRIT~1:

Yes, I have one other subdirectory, but it is not long: \XyWrite\XyWrite

You suggested: dir /A:D /S /X [/P]
Wonderful! Here's what it gives for the "XyWrite III+": XYWR#37D

"cd xywr#37d" will correctly change the directory when I am in its parent
directory.
The prompt then shows: D:\XyWrite\xywr#37d>
DIR then gives me a correct listing, so I'm really *there*.

"cd xywr#37d" works from the command line of XyDOS 4.018, XyWin 4.12 and
NBWin 6.1.

"XYWR#37D" shows up in the XyWin Open File menu, but sometimes the menu
system fails.
It works properly if (through the menus) I change directory to D:, then to
XyWrite, and then to xywr#37d (which is listed). But if I am in d:\xywrite
when I enter the Open File menu, trying to change to xywr#37d doesn't give
me a directory listing even if it says xywr#37d is the current directory.
(Changing the drive to C: and then back to D: will give me a proper
directory listing.)

NBWin 6.1 is a step backward from XyWin. Its Open File dialogue does not
show XYWR#37D. It lists one fewer subdirectory than is on the disk.
