This sort of thing has been the case "forever".  Any time I get a hit on,
for instance, the spell check, when the word is spelled correctly, I open
code view, and check to see what is in the word other than letters.  There
is usually some command (frequently something like
<<MD+IT>><<MD-IT>>) within the word.  If there is any command within the
word, NB will treat it as two (or more) words.
