Unicode
I would formulate my need for Unicode in the following way:
(a) Notabene's elegant features are a great asset, and when camera ready
copies are required (which is what I had to do for my recent book)
nothing would serve me better.
(b) When the text is required to be in Unicode format, whether as a Word
file or any other Unicode format, I would like to have NB export its
elegant characters to crude Unicode format, for example the vowel under
Resh should appear, even if not in the most visually gratifying place,
or the circumflex in Greek should be one of the two options. The
publisher is then able to translate Unicode into the desired graphics,
if they really care.
(c) I am not sure what can be done about those character that are simply
absent from Unicode, and I am looking forward to read the second
installment, with the answer.
A general note on publishing: When I was informed that I had to present
a camera ready copy I was quite angry, feeling that publishers are
taking advantage of us writers based on availability of new technology.
But when my book was out two months after I handed in the manuscript,
with no proofs, I was quite happy. Formatting the book with NBWin was
easy, and even the indexing, for which I had to revert to the DOS
version, wasn't too bad. I would certainly repeat this in the future,
and actively offer the publisher this option if I run into character
compatibility problems. By the way, the book has many Hebrew terms and
words in it, but they were all transliterated, since the target audience
was not necessarily Hebrew literate. Had this not been the case, I
couldn't have done it at the time in NBWin. Now that Hebrew is
functional also on the Hebrew Enabled version, I would not shy away from
Hebrew characters in the text.
