An Occasional Posting on the NOTABENE Mailing List

This is an occasional posting to the NOTABENE Mailing List

  1. Another year has past and so the archives for the NOTABENE list will now start afresh. All the old listings will still be available. Due to some computer reorganization, the archives have been moved to
    http://www.hamline.edu/~wnk/notabene/index.html
When you open up the archives, you will find links to the archives for other years. The index and search features refer to all the archvies and not just to present year archives.

  2. I have noticed that our mail server (something that is not in my control) at times does not resolve mail addresses correctly. This may cause the list server to unsubscribe you from the list. If this happens, please resubscribe to the list. The problem seems to occur if a particular internet provider is down at the time that mail is going out.

  3. To send mail to the list address the mail to
        notabene@nospam.piper.hamline.edu
Do not send test messages or messages regarding your subscription status to this address.

  4. Here are some commands to the list server which may be handy. All commands should be sent to listproc@nospam.piper.hamline.edu The list server tries to protect the list from messages meant for it and not for the list by looking at the subject line. If it finds key words such as TEST or REMOVE or SUBSCRIBE (there are too many to list) in the subject line, it will reject the message. Because of this, commands sent to the list server SHOULD NOT CONTAIN A SUBJECT LINE.

Some mailers have a built in sense of internet ethics which demand that messages contain a subject line and will insert a subject line of their own if you do not insert one. If your mailer does this, put
                XXXXXXXXXXX
    in your subject line.

    TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE LIST
SUB NOTABENE < your real name >
Note: if you see something in angle brackets <> treat the text in angle brackets as a description of what should be placed in this location. For example, if your name is ALFRED E. NEWMAN, the command would be
        SUB NOTABENE Alfred E Newman

    TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE LIST
    UNSUB NOTABENE

TO CHECK ON THE STATUS OF YOUR SUBSCRIPTION
    SET NOTABENE

TO CHANGE THE STATUS OF YOUR SUBSCRIPTION
SET NOTABENE MAIL < status >
    where status is one of
ACK to receive a confirmation of each posted message
NOACK to NOT receive a confirmation of each posted message
POSTPONE to NOT receive any postings from the list (this will still allow you to post messages to the list even though you are not receiving any of the messages
DIGEST to receive postings grouped into several messages per mailing

TO CHANGE THE ADDRESS FROM WHICH YOU ARE SUBSCRIBED
SET NOTABENE ADDRESS < password > < new address >
Note: When you subscribe to the list, you are given a password (sent in the confirmation message.) This password is aconfirmation that the command is being sent from you rather than from someone trying to masquerade as you.

  5. A note regarding the ARCHIVES. The archives are threaded which means that the system used at Hamline tries to tie messages regarding the same topic together. If your message is in response to a posted message and you use the REPLY option in your mailer, your message will contain an indication to which message you are replying. This indicator is a unique ID number attached to each message. If you are posting a new message, do not use the REPLY option and merely change the subject line. If you do this, your message will still be THREADED to the message to which you reply.

  6. If you have any questions regarding the list, please send them to
