Indexing

To M.W.Poirer and Laura Kennelly
I followed the directions in the NB4.5 (large black covered) manual,
with
one major variation. One trick I learned by painful experience was to
break up my .WL file. Instead of using one .WL files containing my whole
index, I broke it up into about five sections. So e.g., my author indexing
was done with a .WL file which contained authors whose names went from A-E.
I then went over the same file with an second .WL file which contained
author names from F-J, an so on. I did the same with my subject index. I
found that the program hanged itself if I used a .WL file that covered
either author or subjects from A-Z. I then combined the various .WL files.
I did not set up a .MS file, but indexed each chapter separately. The
largest file in book was 100kb. What I did might sound like a kludge, as
Americans (and Canadians???) say, but it worked and didn't take up too much
time. I also did an index of biblical references as well.
In August Steve Walsh asked the list about the direction in the manual
to
set PL=500. He had some problem with this. This did not happen to me. I
used that setting, inserted the pg breaks manually and was very happy with
the result - even more so now as I watch a friend put together an index for
a 450 page book without any of utilities that NB offers.
        Hope this is of help.
