4.2: superscript numbers

Dear all,

I am completing a manuscript which was originally composed 
on an older wp program, but which I have transferred into 
NB4.2. Normally superscript numbers  (for notes) print smaller 
than normal numbers in text; but these don't. However, there 
is no seeming consistency: some print all right, others not, 
and in two printouts of the same file the results will be 
different. (I am not using automatic footnoting, as it was too 
tedious an effort to transfer all the notes; but this shouldn't 
matter, as I've done other documents in NB without automatic 
footnoting, and the numbers printed OK).

Is there a quick fix for this? (The thought had crossed my 
mind that I should perhaps delete the old numbers -- which I 
just superscripted, rather than doing over, although at this 
point I can't recall which were old numbers and which are new 
ones I put in with NB -- but this sounds like a pretty time-
consuming chore.)
