Thank you for your helpful messages. I haven't got web access back in
spite of doing a complete  reinstall of Windows 98 (from the CAB files,
which Paul pointed me towards). I still get the message about internal
errors. I find it mysterious that I can still do email (same tel. no. and
all), but I guess I'll try to hand the mystery over to the place I got the
laptop from.

I'm very glad to have learned more from you two about how to reinstall,
and how to do that delayed installation trick with the Microsoft site.
