bad delta/expanded view

I had a file in NB4.5 that drew an error message "invalid format command"
when I opened it.  The bad delta was a BB with a missing <<.  The file was
invisible beyond that point.  I went into expanded view and eliminated the
rest of the bad delta, but still could not see the rest of the file.  Since
I had the identical file on my notebook, I opened the file in a text editor
(Kedit) rather than NB, erased the bad delta, and could then view the
entire file in NB.  My question: why did the file disappear beyond the bad
delta even in expanded mode?
