Julie,
DON'T fool around with "deltree"! A "tree" is a (sub)directory, plus all the
subdirectories contained in it (and in them .... ad ....). "Deltree" means
"delete tree". I assume you DON'T want to delete an entire one!
I don't understand the problem with your MS-DOS window. You don't have to
exit and restart in MS-DOS mode. The MS-DOS Prompt icon on your Start -->
Programs menu should open a windowed MS-DOS session, and can be reset to open a
full-screen session (I have created two shortcuts, one for each). In either
case you should be able to type at the command prompt as usual in DOS. One
possibility crosses my mind: could something else be cutting in, after you
open the DOS window, and de-selecting that session? Check the topmost line of
the MS-DOS window (where it says "MS-DOS prompt"). If that line is not
brightly colored (the color depends on your system, your theme, your color
scheme, and, for all I know, on your breed of dog), then go to the DOS window
and click on it. If that changes the color of the topmost line to something
brighter, then try typing your commands. If your MS-DOS Prompt icon already
opens a full-screen session, you should be able to type at the command prompt
without any further ado.
