Jerry,
a simple solution that I found by chance: go to the "Set" menue (three steps
from F1 with the left arrow -- easy to remember even when there is nothing
on the screen), then S for "Symbol sets", then Esc. It works for me and as
long as it does I don't  bother about the reason, which may be complicated.
I hope it works for you as well.
