The problem is likely your HP *Windows* printer driver. The 540
doesn't use PCL, as far as I know, but John Berg's suggestions were
likely near the mark. HP, in order to dazzle users, installs a printer
control applet that replaces the Windows print spooler and allows
bidirectional communication between the printer and the Windows
desktop. It will send you cute little notices when you are out of
paper or encounter other problems. The difficulty is that this manager
is a Windows-specific proposition and DOS applications (even some
Windows applications that expect the Windows print spooler) will choke
on it. You have to remove it.
Since I don't have the 540 I can't tell you exactly how to remove the
little HP program. You can try just telling the Windows print spooler
to *not* spool DOS print jobs--that might work. Others on the list
have reported the necessity of removing an object from your Startup
folder (look in the menus that pop up when you click the Windows Start
button for this folder). Perhaps one of those with more experience can
shed additional light...
