Marilyn,
I don't know what differences exist between your recent-model
Dells at home & office and my 3-year-old model, but I have not had any
problem printing with NB4.x to a DJ540 in DOS or Win3.1. I changed to an
HP4L before moving to Win95, so I can't guarantee no new problems exist
for the DJ540, but my husband now uses it in Win95 with other programs
and has no problems whatever (but on a non-Dell computer).

I strongly doubt the suggestion that your problem is with the
Dell computer. Dell (unlike Compaq) tends to keep all their hardware bog
standard so such problems won't arise. And it certainly isn't NB 4.x.
Many of us have printed to the DJ540 from NB4.0-4.5 for many years.

There may be some problem with your parallel port or its
settings in CMOS, however. At bootup, hit the DEL key and go into the
CMOS. See what settings you have on your parallel port: is it EPP, ECP,
AT or PS/2? I seem to recall that the DJ540 may not behave well with
ECP, but I'm sure EPP is all right. You might check the HP website for
more information, and make sure you have the right driver for Win95.

Can you print under other circumstances? Try sending a short
file from the DOS prompt using "COPY filename LPT1" Try printing a file
from Windows. Let us know what your results are.

        Dorothy
