"Little Big Land," an English Language Village program for French
children, is looking to fill the following positions in France for the
Summer of 2006
POSITIONS:
~ESL Coordinators
~Residential Life Counselors
STAFF:
It is of prime importance that all candidates enjoy working with young
people in the close proximity of the "village" setting. The staff is
composed of native English speakers (with working knowledge of the
French language) and of French counselors who have lived in an
English-speaking country. A curriculum has been prepared by an American
educator with experience in the language village approach. An American
teacher living in Tours will be responsible for the general
organization of the program, and the staff will be headed by a French
camp director and an American ESL coordinator.
AN ENGLISH VILLAGE IN FRANCE?
French parents and children choose LBL because it is a language
village, an immersion program where participants use English--hear it
and speak it--throughout the day, not in a school setting, but in a
variety of natural, everyday activities. At Little Big Land, young
children can begin their discovery of the English-speaking world
without leaving home!
PARTICIPANTS:
Boys and girls ages 9 to 13, who have just finished CM1-CM2-6ème or
5ème--the equivalent of 4th to 7th grade.
APPROACH:
Little Big Land is an opportunity for students to take their first
steps in English, or for those who have already started English in
school, to put to use what they have already learned. Above all, it is
a way to break down the inhibitionsthat interfere with oral
communication.
During each session, 1-3 days will be devoted to a 'visit" of 5
different English-speaking countries. The daily schedule includes:
"Parliament," an introduction to the the day for the whole village;
"Tribal Council" sessions, where children are divided into small
groups; singing; celebrations; games; crafts -- all based on the
tradition of these 5 countries and all in English. Staff members will
also interact with villagers in English during meals and free time. In
this kind of immersion environment, children absorb new vocabulary and
structures in English much as they learned their native language, by
hearing it and speaking all day, in many different contexts.
SITE:
Little Big Land has three locations in France:
Tours, on the banks of the Loire
Sabres, south of Bordeaux
Le-Chambon-sur-Lignon, southwest of Lyon near Puy
DATES:
Three 14-day sessions are planned in 2006 between July 2 and August 14.
Counselors are required to arrive by June 28 for a one-week staff
orientation/training.
COMPENSATION:
Compensation varies according to position. Room and board are provided
throughout the sessions.
Staff members are responsible for their own travel expenses.
APPLICATIONS:
Contact Language & Friendship for application information. We
encourage applicants to apply by February 1. Language & Friendship
partners with Little Big Land to coordinate staffing for the camps.
