ESL teacher needed-

The Center for Training and Careers, a non-profit alternative High School for 
immigrant/refugee students is seeking a qualified educator for Minneapolis 
location.   ESL teacher with proper credentials, coursework toward 
credentialing.  This position is a temporary part-time position from

Laura Diaz works with 
a company called Cendant Mobility in Chicago.  She is in charge of 
locating language teachers for corporate clients in the TC Metro area.  
She is in great need of ESL trainers immediately.  Some are in the 
suburbs of both Mpls and St. Paul, some are in the city.  The pay is 
OK- about $25/hour.  They also pay mileage, copies and have a small 
budget per student for books and materials.  I think this would be a 
great opportunity for TEFL folks or someone who is looking to round out 
their teaching experiences while they work on license or an MA.

Hainan Normal University, founded in Fall 1949, is the oldest
 institution of higher education in Hainan.  It is located in Haikou, a
beautiful tropical island city rich in natural wonders, and is a
well-known seaside holiday resort. Enveloped in green trees and woods,
 the campus ia beautiful and pleasant with coconut breeze and fragrance
 everywhere. It is referred to as "The Garden University" of Haikou 
 City.
 Hainan Normal University is a key university under the administration 
 of the Hainan province for teacher education, multi-disciplinary and
advanced scientific studies.  The university has thirteen departments
 with about 600 full-time teachers, 72 professors, 213 associate
 professors, and about 20,000 students from 28 provinces and from 
abroad.
 Hainan Normal University is currently hiring English teachers for Spring
2006, preferably with a Master's degree at the Associate Professor
level, with demonstrated teaching experience. Salary ranges between
3,300 to 4500/yuan per month, with air-conditioned housing provided.
After one year, 10,000/y will be provided for international travel.

MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS
BILINGUAL/BICULTURAL (BOTH SPANISH AND SOMALI
MATH HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER

SUMMARY:
Teaching high school Algebra I and II, Pre-Algebra and Geometry in Spanish, 
Somali, and English to recently arrived immigrant students (ages 17-21) 
enrolled in District's Adult Basic Education classes. Duties also include: 
serving as a liaison for families of Somali students and as a resource for 
cultural events in the school; Collaborating with school's Science teacher to 
develop inter-disciplinary curriculum for Math and Science; Assisting School 
Counselor in translation of transcripts from other countries; and Serving as 
faculty liaison for the Bilingual Program's aides, who speak Somali, Oromo, 
Amharic, Spanish and Hmong. The requirements for the position are: The job 
requires at least a bachelor's degree in mathematics or in a field that 
requires proficiency in mathematics (such as chemistry, computer science, 
economics, etc.). We also require applicants to be fluent in Spanish and 
Somali, as a great percentage of our students speak these languages and regard 
English as a second language. 

FUNCTION: 
Provide quality instruction to high school students in mathematics aligned to 
state and national standards.
Use a variety of formative assessment strategies to diagnose student 
understanding of the course content.
Plan appropriate differentiation strategies to address the individual learning 
needs and learning styles of urban students.
Manage classroom behavior.
Work collaboratively with a small learning community team of teachers.
Participate in ongoing professional development at the site and district level. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Acquire knowledge of the goals of the Minneapolis Public School District 
Improvement Agenda and site/school goals.  Work to support and achieve those 
goals.
Establish developmentally appropriate instructional and behavioral expectations 
for students and for self and communicate those to students and their families. 
Create lessons and learning environments that are safe, respectful and 
interesting as well as multicultural/gender and ability fair/developmentally 
appropriate.  Select, adapt and individualize materials appropriate for diverse 
student populations and skill levels.
Teach students the required curricula using strategies that foster thinking, 
reasoning and problem solving.
Collaborate and communicate regularly with families in making educational 
decisions and use family and community resources to support learning.
Assess students' developmental, cognitive and social needs and provide 
developmentally appropriate instruction to meet those needs.
Regularly assess student learning by using multiple forms of assessment.
Facilitate positive interactions between students and teacher, student and 
peers and student and other adults.
Model learning and behavior consistent with the expectations for students.
Assess own instructional effectiveness through the Professional Development 
Process (PDP).
Participate in ongoing and regular staff, team and individual professional 
development.
Collaborate with peers to develop, plan and implement best practices based on 
the needs/abilities of the students.
Participate in site-based management and shared decision making.
Always keep the students' needs and rights first and foremost in any 
educational decision making.
Demonstrate competence in the Minneapolis Standards of Effective Instruction.
Have a working knowledge of and implement the Minnesota State Standards and the 
District Graduation Requirements.


QUALIFICATIONS: 
The job requires at least a bachelor's degree in mathematics or in a field that 
requires proficiency in mathematics (such as chemistry, computer science, 
economics, etc.).  
Applicants must be fluent in Spanish and Somali.

SALARY:   
38 weeks, Teacher Contract, 1.0 (full-time)
