TEFL OPPORTUNITY IN CHINA
>From Mark Swartz, former Hamline TEFL student:

I completed Hamline's TEFL certification course in 2002 and I spent the past
year in China, teaching at a university in a fairly large city named Jinan, the
provincial capital of the Shandong province, to the south of Beijing. Our
university is now looking for foreign teachers for the coming term and for the
second term (starting in September and late February, respectively).

If you or any other TEFL grads would ever consider the adventure of teaching in
China, please give some thought to our university. I had no interest in China
in 2002, when I attended Hamline, but I'm now glad I changed my mind. Here is
a summary of the best that teaching at a position like mine has to offer.

   WONDERFUL students
Honest, happy, and warm-hearted people in the city and the province
A university teaching position that offers a great deal of freedom to teach
as you see fit
The opportunity to become an instant celebrity
Comfortable and Western-like accommodations (provided free), with several
other North American teaching peers for support and friendship
A very good city for learning the Chinese language in a standard dialect
A very safe and manageable city
Proximity to Beijing and many of China's most famous sites (including the
Great Wall)
A chance to experience both developing China and the "real" China
The opportunity to communicate with me before you decide (I will be very
honest about the downsides of Jinan and China)

If China and many of these things appeal to you, and if you'd like the
opportunity to teach at a university level while being left alone by the
administration, why not contact me at mwswartz45@yahoo.com?

You can also check out the university's web site at www.sdai.edu.cn

At the website, select the English language version and . If you choose to
apply for a position online, you'll likely deal with Ms. Leilei Zheng, who is
easy to work with but a little busy these days.

Our university is rapidly expanding, with a brand new and very attractive
campus in the suburbs, but our apartments are located at the old campus, which
is within walking distance of the city center and most businesses, including
two Target clones with adjoining supermarkets. And yes, we're walking distance
from many beer joints, night clubs, and restaurants, ranging from those that
serve "What is that?" to old reliables like McDonald's, KFC, and Pizza Hut.

Feel free to send me an e-mail and we could also talk by phone. I will be in
the U.S. until September, so contact me as soon as possible, especially if you
are thinking about the next term.

I really did have a great time last year, and I would like to see our
university continue to improve, by attracting well-trained teachers like us
Hamline TEFL grads.

Sincerely,

Mark W. Swartz
