Would you like to be able to communicate better with your Somali,
Spanish-speaking and Hmong students? Consdier taking the following summer
school courses at Hamline:
ModL 6710 Spoken and Written Hmong
Bied 6611 Survival Spanish for Teachers
Bied 6614 Survival Somali for Teachers
All of the courses address both language and cultural issues. If you don't have
a Hamline summer educator catalog so that you can register, call 651-523-2900
and ask for one.

COMPREHENSIVE CENTER REGION VI ANNOUNCES
A Second Languages and Cultures Summer Institute:
INTERPRETATION AND TRANSLATION
IN A SCHOOL SETTING
AUGUST 8-12, 2005
WHAT: A five-day institute, held on the Hamline University campus in St. Paul,
MN. The goal is to prepare bilingual school staff to work effectively and
efficiently in a school setting with students, parents, school staff and
community members to assure all students equal educational opportunity, access
and participation in academic and school life.
TOPICS TO BE ADDRESSED:
Education Systems and School Organization
Schools and the Law/Rules/Guidelines
Language and Communication
Resources for Interpreting and Translation
Cross-Cultural Communication
Defining the Roles of Interpreters and Translators
Working With Other School Staff
Working with Parents and Community
The Role of the Interpreter in Conflict Resolution
Testing and Evaluation of Students
FOR: Bilingual teachers and paraprofessionals, bilingual home-school liaisons,
bilingual cultural liaisons, and interpreters and translators who work in a
school setting or communicate with schools.
(Number of participants is limited.)
FEES:
$120.00 - Registration Fee (To be paid with registration)
$196.00 - Optional fee for 2 Hamline University credits (Not required. Paid on
site.)

VOLUNTEER NEEDED
The International Academy of Minnesota is in need of a volunteer teacher to
teach ESL Literature/Composition classes for three weeks. (June 20th - July
8th)
