ESL TEACHER NEEDED

The Lao Family community English Education Program is in need of a teacher for
newly-arrived Hmong from Thailand. The class wil be held at the main LFC office
at 320 University Ave, either mornings or afternoons, 4 hrs/day, 5 days/wk.
They would prefer to have the class start as soon as possible. This teacher
would be rather isolated from the rest of the staff in the English Program,
but would have access to a computer lab, and several native Hmong speakers for
occasional translation assistance. If you are interested, please call Jean
Hanslin, Instructional Coordinator, at 651-771-3891 or email her at
jhanslin@laofamily.org

MINNEAPOLIS ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOL OPENINGS
* Middle School ESL (inclusion model with pull-out during homeroom
&/or homework/reading time)

Our director, Leon Cooper, would like to receive resumes from licensed
applicants with 3 or more years of middle school teaching experience,
preferably in urban/suburban schools. I would also encourage candidates
with other experience (that perhaps does not precisely match the above
criteria) to apply, as well.

I will tell you a bit about the school here since our website is still
under construction. Minneapolis Academy is a very small charter
school-currently we have about 77 students total between the 5th & 6th
grades. Next year these students will be 6th- & 7th-graders in our
school. I believe that a new 5th grade will not be included at that time
(but I think such "backfilling" of new 5th- and 6th-graders is planned
for the 2006/07 year, when a larger facility will be sought). Such small
numbers make it easier for all staff to be consistent when it comes to
school culture, expectations, discipline, etc. I think Leon is hoping to
reach a grand total of 100 students for the 2005/06 year.

The Minneapolis Academy philosophy is "the road to college." We use a
rigorous Core Knowledge <http://www.coreknowledge.org/> -based
curriculum in these middle school years to prepare disadvantaged
students for success in high school & college. We have single-sex
classrooms and students wear uniforms. The St. Paul Pioneer Press wrote
an article about us in December.

I am happy to speak with potential ESL candidates who have questions
about the program, our ESL population, etc. As this is an inclusion
model, I am rarely in my classroom, so I will respond to voicemails by
the end of the day or the following morning; otherwise, email is a great
way to reach me:

BILINGUAL RESOURCE

Tufts University's Health Sciences Library has created an online health
resource for Asian Americans whose first language is not English. The SPIRAL
project website ("Selected Patient Information Resources in Asian Languages")
has detailed health information in seven Asian languages: Chinese, Hmong,
Khmer, Korean, Laotian, Thai and Vietnamese. Information is designed for use
by patients or by physicians. Website users can search the site by language,
or by topics such as asthma, diabetes, nutrition, woment's health, etc. Some
of the materials in Hmong originated in Minnesota, but they are organized by
topic in this website.

Since families often approach ELL teachers and bilingual staff with a variety
of questions, this site may be worth bookmarking or sharing with your school
nurse: <http://spiral.tufts.edu/>.
