Excerpt from press release:
College of St. Catherine unveils new recruitment and retention video for the
Hmong community: STITCHING OUR STORIES: THE COLLEGE JOURNEY
St. Paul, MN*April 7, 2005*The College of St. Catherine's first
cultural-specific recruitment and retention video made for the Hmong
community will be presented for public viewing on Thursday, April 21, from
Noon to 1 p.m. Hosted by St. Catherine's Multicultural and International
Programs and Services (MIPS), the premiere of Stitching Our Stories: The
College Journey is free and open to the public. A brief discussion will
follow the viewing.
Produced with generous support from the St. Paul Travelers
Foundation, the video was created by local filmmaker Mark Tang of Passion
Fruit Production Company with the assistance of the MIPS staff. Helping
families understand the college experience and see the link between a
college education and its relevance to community, long-term career, and
life satisfaction is key to gaining family support. Additionally, offering
families clear information about applying to and attending college is
especially important for first generation college students who are
immigrants from non-English speaking families. This documentary
illuminates the college experience for the Hmong community so that they
will be better equipped to provide stronger support and understanding to
ensure their daughters' academic success while respecting the oral
tradition of the Hmong culture.
