Tutors needed
>From Paul Gore, Leap Program Coordinator, International Academy --
LEAP is looking for tutors who would be interested in working with 7th
and 8th grade students. The vast majority of them are Hmong students
who are recent arrivals from the Wat Tham Krabok refugee camp in
Thailand. They are all beginning level English students.
Of our junior high population, there is a class of about 20 students
for
whom English has been more difficult than for others. The fact that
there
are 20 students, all of whom need extra attention, combined with the
typical pre- and early-teen energy, has made the classes rather
demanding for the teachers.
A tutor who would be willing to work with a small group of these
students
would be a big help in keeping the classes manageable, and the students
would benefit from small-group attention. The work would consist of
basic conversation, vocabulary drills (reading & speaking), writing &
spelling, and potentially some math and science depending on overlap with
other classes or time of day that the tutor/s is/are available.
All of these activities would be at the very beginning level of
English,
with the added factor that many of the students have not been in any
kind of school before (as an added bonus for them, the weather is
already colder than anything they have ever experienced; welcome to
Minnesota . . .).
If interested, please contact Paul Gore, Leap Program Coordinator at
(651) 228 --7706. We are at 631 North Albert, which is about a
10 minute walk towards University from the Hamline campus.
I would be happy to provide more information about the school,
students,staff, etc.
