Detect Conenction!

Dear BCB Users,
    I am trying to find a way to detect if Connection was established before
my program started. I don't want to notify the user to cennect. I just want
to detect when the user connects and then simple start counting the time.
Afterwards I need to detect when the user disconnects so that I can stop
counting and save the time used in a file.
    How can I check for connection?
    Please help.
