Sorry, I don't remember which site I got it
from, but I have a component called TParser 
by:
    Renate Schaaf (1993)
    Alin Flaider (1996, 1997)
    Stefan Hoffmeister (1996, 1997)

It allows you to specify an equation that can
include variables for evaluation and many 
of the standard mathematical functions.  It is
free and looks relatively easy to extend.
