students Picture I have had the distinct pleasure of working with a large number of talented students in a variety of settings while at Hamline. Although I saw them daily in my classes, it is through the setting of conducting research on various problems in my lab that I have made a closer connection and had the benefit of their insight and dedication to the problems we have worked on. A few years ago two of my students, Will Ritter and Jon Hunter completed a research project that was ultimately presented on Capitol Hill in Washington DC. You can see them pictured here with our late senator, the Honorable Paul Wellstone. The students also got to meet their congressional members and present their work at a the annual National Conferences on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). The trip to the Hill was sponsored by another related organization, the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) of which I am a member of the Physics and Astronomy Council. CUR sponsors undergraduate research efforts in a variety of ways.

Listed below are some links to information for students followed by links to former research students of mine. I try and keep up with them, but as they are moving around a bit, it is not always easy. If you are one of them, or know more about more current conditions for them, please drop me a note so that I can update the links.

    Information for Students:

  • The NSF funds a number of summer research "institutes" called REU sites. This is a listing of the sites from all disciplines.

    Former Research Student's:

  • Sherry Foss (89). Got her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota (1997) and last I heard was working at Seagate.
  • Steve Boege (90). Completed his Ph.D. and was working on terawatt lasers at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Lab (SLAC) in California -zap-.
  • Ben Bard (91). A former graduate student at Penn State in Acoustics. He completed his Ph.D. in acoustics.
  • Heather Henneman (92). Former Peace Corps volunteer and now a graduate of the Civil Engineering program at the University of Minnesota.
  • Joel Parriott (92). Completed his Ph.D. in Astrophysics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and is now the budget examiner for the National Science Foundation at th Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in Washington D.C.
  • Jason Besky (93). Now living with his wife (Maija Besky) and many young boys in Austria. He does computer things.
  • Travis (Novotny) Calef (93). Last I heard he was working for a small computer company in the Twin Cities.
  • Matt Johnson (93). Was a graduate student at the University of Minnesota in Chemical Engineering.
  • Greg U'ren (93). Greg completed his Ph.D. in Surface Science at UCLA and is now gainfully employed in Southern California (and probably considerably further along with his tan than I am).
  • Thang Huynh (94). Thang was working (last I heard) at Cyberoptics in Minneapolis, a company that develops machine vision systems.
  • Kris Kainz (94). Finished a physics Ph.D. at Rice University in Texas (and a long way from the iron range). He is now working as a Radiation Oncologist in Milwaukee, WI.
  • Neill Johnson (94). Neill is working for a local electronics firm here in Minnesota.
  • Maija (Niska) Besky (94). Now being a Mom (4 boys or is it 5?) in Austria. And a lot more too!
  • Olena Sinkevich (94). Also went to Rice, but in Mathematics.
  • Maryanne Domm (96). FInished her Ph.D. at the University of Arizona in 2003. She has been working on vector machines since then.
  • Amy (Deutsch) Tix (97). Last I heard she was going into engineering of some kind, after a stint in elementary education.
  • Matt Howard (98). Matt was working for 3M in the Microreplication Technology Center in Petaluma, CA. Not sure if he is still there.
  • Andrew (Drew) Ness (98). Drew finsihed an advanced degree at the University of Minnesota.
  • Chad Stelzig (98). Chad completed his Masters in Electrical Engineering at the University of Chicago.
  • Jon Hunter (99). Jon is now off to a life of service and adventure. Last I heard he was working as an AmeriCorps volunteer organizer.
