Communication is fundamental to our daily lives. Spoken words are only a small part of the way we talk to one another, however. Intonation, body language, and facial expression also contribute a great deal to how we get our messages and meanings across to others. Media work the same way. Using photographs, print, moving images, music, and spoken words, media convey to us complex ideas and information. This information influences how we view our reality and ourselves. Moreover, it influences how we think, how we govern ourselves, and how we spend our spare time. But how powerful is that influence? We will try to understand these questions through a combination of readings, lectures, films and discussions. Such understanding will make us better media consumers, or better media producers in the future.
