“If in the twilight of memory we shall meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper song.”

- Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

The Blue Garden was established in 2004 by women of the Hamline community in honor of Sue Osnes, wife of President Larry G. Osnes, and in memory of their daughter, Tami Sue Osnes (1966-1972). The Blue Garden, so named for Tami Sue’s favorite color, provides a serene intersection of learning, life, and reflection and is tucked in the center of campus--between Old Main, Bush Memorial Library, and the School of Law.

The garden’s perfect-circle shape, planted with perennial flowers in shades of blue, evokes the continuing circle of life and growth, crossed with paths to symbolize choices made or roads yet to be taken.

The blue limestone wall represents an interruption to that circle—by conflict, loss, or choices made. Reflection is deepened by loss, which may be tempered by time but is never forgotten.

The rushing water symbolizes moving through loss, but never moving past it. A lone oak tree represents the growth of the soul through learning, loss, and reflection. It symbolizes Hamline’s commitment that we become persons we are meant to be, and that we learn what we are meant to learn.
