Miller is a highly regarded and requested national literacy consultant and author of several professional books on the teaching of reading. A teacher extraordinaire, Miller works with Denver, CO, schools and knows how to capture the joy and passion for teaching literacy on a vast array of topics. Miller returns to Hamline's Summer Literacy Institute for the second time this year, back by popular demand and her continuing contributions to the field of literacy.

"Learning Floats On A Sea of Talk: Exploring the Potential of
Talk To Support and Assess Student Learning"
Pierce is an elementary and middle school teacher, a literacy curriculum specialist, and a national literacy consultant. She has served as an adjunct professor with several colleges, is an advocate for multicultural literature, is a prominent leader in the NCTE (National Council Teachers of English), and works with Clayton, Missouri schools.

"Integrating Fitness and Reading: the How and Why"
"Smart and Sensible Fluency Assessment"
Opitz is an international and national literacy consultant, literacy specialist and coordinator, author of several books on a wide variety of literacy topics including ELL, fluency, assessment, alternative texts, physical education and literacy. Optiz works as a professor of elementary education and reading at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley.

"Mud, Straw, Snow, Paper, and a Riot: The Essentials for Making a Picture Book"
Lauren Stringer is an artist, author, and theatrical designer living in Minneapolis. Her first picture book, Mud, by Mary Lyn Ray, won a Minnesota Book Award, IRA Children’s Choice, and Crayola Kids Best Book of the Year. Her newest Book—When Stravinsky Met Nijinsky, Two Artists, Their Ballet, and One Extraordinary Riot—received a McKnight Fellowship and was released this spring to much acclaim and many starred reviews.

"The Oral Tradition of Storytelling, Poetry and Teaching"
A storyteller, educator, and literacy activist, Fitch is an award- winning Canadian author of children and adult books. Fitch returns to Hamline's Summer Literacy Institute for her second time this year. Her work has expanded to include the integration of yoga and exercise into the literacy process.
