Hamline Ranked Nationally by Peace Corps for Alumni VolunteersHamline University is pleased to announce it has been ranked in the top 25 on the list of “Top Peace Corps Volunteer Producing Colleges and Universities.” Hamline placed 24th in its category of small colleges and universities, with fourteen of its undergraduate alumni and one graduate school alumni currently serving in the Peace Corps. Since the Peace Corps was established in 1961, 129 Hamline University alumni have served as volunteers, applying their skills and knowledge to help improve the lives of people in need across the globe. When compiling the “Top Volunteers” list, the Peace Corps ranked schools by the size of their student bodies. Hamline is listed in the small colleges and universities category, which includes schools with fewer than 5,000 students. Other Minnesota schools that ranked high in the small colleges and universities category this year include Carleton College (ranked 5th with 22 volunteers), St. Olaf College (ranked 9th with 19 volunteers), and Macalester College (ranked 16th with 17 volunteers). In a congratulatory letter to Hamline University President Linda Hanson, Director of the Peace Corps Ron Tschetter wrote, “By constantly contributing graduates who have served so admirably as volunteers, the Peace Corps mission of global peace and friendship has been enriched and sustained for more than four decades.” Currently more than 8,000 people are serving abroad in the Peace Corps, a record number of volunteers for the 47-year old organization. To become a volunteer, applicants must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years old. For more information on the Peace Corps, visit www.peacecorps.gov. |
