Pipers sweep Franklin Pierce to open spring break trip

The Hamline University women's tennis team opened their spring break trip in Orlando, Florida by sweeping Franklin Pierce University, 9-0, on Monday.

Kelly Gust (Jr., East Grand Forks, Minn.) and Liz Gunderson (Jr., New Prague, Minn.) led the way for the Pipers, teaming for an easy 8-1 win at first doubles before winning their singles matches in straight sets.

Gust won at first singles, 6-3, 6-1, while Gunderson took the victory at second singles, 6-2, 6-2.

Sara Mitambo (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kristen Kiemele (Fy., Eagan, Minn.) at second doubles, and Ashley Johnson (Fy., Maplewood, Minn.) and Kate Burnevik (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) at third doubles pulled out identical and gritty 9-8 (7-5) victories to ensure the sweep.

Mitambo played the closest singles match, as she came back from a set down to push the match to a third set super-breaker at third singles, as she won 2-6, 6-1, 10-5.

Kiemele won 6-3, 6-1 at fourth singles, while Johnson and Burnevik flip-flopped scores in winning at fifth and sixth singles. Johnson won 6-4, 6-2, and Burnevik pulled out the 6-2, 6-4 victory.

The Pipers remain in Florida this week for a series of matches over spring break.
