Women's hockey ends season in MIAC Semifinals

Emily Dusold Crystal Testolin
The best season in Hamline women's hockey history ended Friday night with a 4-1 loss to third-ranked Gustavus in St. Peter, Minn.

The Pipers (15-9-3) came into the matchup after winning their first playoff game in team history over St. Mary's on Tuesday night, but the Gusties (24-2) took command of the game early on a Christine Wicker goal at 4:25 of the first period.

The score remained the same at the first intermission thanks to superb goaltender from Crystal Testolin. The sophomore stopped 46 shots on the evening, including 24 in the first period.

Gustavus would add a Kelly Crandall power-play goal at 2:27 of the second period.

Hamline cut the lead in half at the 8:58 mark of the second period. Junior Emily Dusold scored on the power play with assists from first-year Sophie Davidson and junior Marie Gross. The goal gave Dusold 45 points for her career - moving her into a tie for first place on the Hamline all-time scoring list.

Gustavus made the score 3-1 at the second intermission when Molly Doyle tallied a power-play goal at 13:52. Crandall later added an empty net goal late in the third period for the game's final tally.

Gustie goaltender Breanna Scavo made 13 saves in the victory. Gustavus moves on to play St. Thomas in the MIAC Finals Sunday afternoon in St. Peter.

The Pipers set records in nearly every team and individual offensive category this season. Their 102 goals on the year is 46 more than the previous mark set last season. They have also team marks for assists in a season (141), points in a season (243), power-play goals in a season (38), goals in game (16 at Chatham on Jan. 6, 2007), and goals in a period (8, third period at Chatham on Jan. 6, 2007). Junior Sara Mickelson set the school record for goals in a season (20), eclipsing the mark set of 17 goals set by Angie Erickson in 2000-01. Mickelson’s 31 points on the season is also a school record, breaking Erickson’s mark of 27 points. First-year Sophie Davidson set the record for assists with 17 helpers on the year.
