Behind Leveille hat trick, women's hockey takes Gusties to overtime

Crystal Testolin Melanie Leveille
First-year Melanie Leveille scored three third period goals to forced overtime before the Gusties came away with a 4-3 win over the Pipers Saturday afternoon at Drake Arena.

The Pipers (1-3-2, 1-2-1 in the MIAC) trailed 2-0 heading into the final period before Leveille scored her first goal of the game - on the power play - at 2:04.

Gustavus (5-1, 4-0), ranked fourth in last week's USCHO.com poll, answered with a Jessica Doig goal at 9:59 to make the score 3-1.

Leveille scored 35 seconds later on a wrister from the slot to inch the Pipers back to a one-goal deficit. She later tied the game at 18:53. Leveille hat trick was just the fifth in Hamline history and first since Dec. 4, 2004 when Emily Gross netted four goals against Bethel.

Jenny Pusch gave the Gusties the victory at 3:36 of the overtime session.

The Gusties jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Stefanie Ubl netted an unassisted goal at 7:51. At 9:13, Mari Gunderson gave Gustavus a two-goal lead.

Hamline goaltender Crystal Testolin stopped 47 shots in a losing effort. Gustie netminder Sarah Windhorst made 21 saves in the win.

The Pipers will play Concordia Saturday at Drake Arena. Game time is slated 7:15 p.m.
