Women's hockey beats St. Mary's for first time

First-year netminder Crystal Testolin made 34 saves for her first career win on Saturday night.
The Hamline women's hockey team defeated St. Mary's for the first time in school history in convincing fashion, beating the Cardinals 6-3 Saturday night at Drake Arena.

The Pipers (3-7-3, 2-5-1 in the MIAC) were outshot in the contest 37-30, but Hamline netted two goals in each of the three period to end the team's 12-game losing streak to St. Mary's.

Leading 4-3, sophomore Mindy Lein scored a rebound goal on a 2-on-1 break at 11:46 of the third period to increase the lead. Less than five minutes later Cortney Hansen scored her second goal of the game to seal the win.

The Pipers held a 23-21 edge in shots on goal over the first two periods, but St. Mary's (3-8-2, 2-4-2) rallied in the third, holding a 16-7 advantage.

The Cardinals tallied two goals in the first 1:06 of the third period to cut the lead to 4-3. Madeline Loftus scored 23 seconds into the period. Jenn Shire would put the Cardinals within a goal at 1:06.

St. Mary's grabbed an early lead when Amy Madden scored at 4:46 of the first period, but Hamline rallied for two goals to take the lead heading into the first intermission.

First-year Cortney Hansen knotted the game at 1-1 at 11:26. Less than four minutes later, sophomore Marie Gross scored on the power play.  Gross fired a wrister from the point through traffic in front of Cardinal goaltender Nikki Jung.

Hamline added to their lead in the second period. Sophomore Sara Mickelson scored a rebound goal on the power play at 16:46. Sophomore Emily Dusold scored at 18:19 to give Hamline a 4-1 advantage.

First-year goaltender Crystal Testolin made 34 saves for her first collegiate win. Jung stopped 24 shots in the loss.

Hamline will host Concordia in a two-game series, starting on Saturday night at Drake Arena. The puck will drop at 7:15 p.m.
