Women's hockey wins opener over Finlandia

Hamline first-year Callista Olynyk scored her first collegiate goal to break a 1-1 tie, and the Pipers went on and defeat Finlandia 3-1 Saturday night in Hancock, Mich.

Olynyk scored the eventual game-winner for the Pipers (1-0) at the 6:01 mark of the third period on assists from Sara Mickelson and Marie Gross.

First-year Brianna Miller would add her first collegiate goal at 19:43 of the period to seal the win.

After a scoreless first period, both teams got on the board in the second. Gross would net the Pipers first goal of the season on the power play at 6:58. Finlandia (4-1) would strike back with a Bree Cote goal at 19:41 of the second period.

Hamline goaltender Rachael Young made 23 saves in the game for the victory. Finlandia's Katie Markovich made 15 stops for the Lions.

The two teams will square off again Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
