Women's hockey skates away with 4-3 win over Wildcats

First-year Brianna Miller scored a goal and added three assists to lead Hamline to a 4-3 victory over St. Catherine Friday night at Drake Arena.

With the score tied at 2-2, Miller flipped the puck from behind the net, ricocheting off Wildcat goaltender Morgan Kane into the goal at 5:10 of the second period.

Miller would later assist on the eventual game-winning goal.  She fed first-year Samantha Dowzak who fired a slapshop topshelf at 9:27 of the second. The goal gave Hamline (4-8-4, 3-6-3 in the MIAC) a 4-2 lead.

The Wildcats (0-14, 0-11) would make things interesting, scoring at 4:39 of the third period on Laurel Volenec's second goal of the game. However, the Pipers controlled most of the third period, outshooting the Wildcats 18-4 in the last 20 minutes.

The Pipers outshot St. Catherine 44-24 in the contest and combined for 36 shots in the first and third periods.

Hamline netminder Rachael Young made 21 saves for the win. Kane stopped 40 shots ina  losing effort.

The Pipers scored two goals in the first 2:27 of the game. Sophomore Marie Gross netted her sixth goal of the season just 23 seconds into the game. A little over two minutes later, Emily Dusold scored her fourth goal of the year. Miller and first-year Kate Raasch assisted on both first period goals.

The two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena. Game time is 4:05 p.m.
