Women's basketball defeated in season opener

Junior forward Shelby Hyllengren netted 18 points, but Hamline fell in their season opener 76-51 to UW-River Falls Tuesday night in River Falls, Wis.

Hyllengren shot 4-of-7 from the field and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line, but as a team, the Pipers (0-1) shot 26 percent from the floor for the contest (14-of-54) and committed 32 turnovers.

The Falcons (1-0) were paced by reserve Kelsie Flanscha who tallied 15 points. Krista Cordes added 13 while Melanie Preiner and Chatele Melgaard added 12 points apiece.

Hamline sophomore Jessica Heinen scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Sophomore Britta Schwartzhoff also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Pipers, who outrebounded the Falcons 47-36.

The Falcons opened the game on a 14-3 run that covered a span of 6:42. Cordes scored seven points during the run.

The Pipers will play at Northwestern on Saturday. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
