Weinreich's free throws sink Macalester

Sophomore Grace Weinreich drives the lane against Macalester.
Sophomore Grace Weinreich hit a pair of free throws with 3.6 seconds left to lift the Hamline women's basketball team to a 68-67 win over Macalaster Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena.

With the win, the Pipers ended the season with a record of 13-12, 11-11 in the MIAC. It is the first season above .500 since the 1996-97 season when the team finished 14-11.

Hamline trailed 67-66 after a Danielle Johnson free throw with 10 seconds remaining. Weinreich then drew a foul driving into the lane. She sank both free throws with 3.6 second left to put Hamline on top. An Elise Pagel desperation heave at the buzzer was well short.

After being tied 31-31 at the break and 41-41 in the early going of the second half, Hamline went on a 10-0 run to take their largest lead of the game. Weinreich and sophomore Krystal Tschumperlin hit back-to-back threes to start the run.

The Scots (7-18, 5-17) answered with an 18-2 run to take a 59-53 lead with 6:54 remaining. Trina PaStarr tallied six of her game-high 21 points during the run.

From there, the Pipers drew even on three different occasions, but didn't lead until Weinreich's heroics to end the game.

Weinreich led the Pipers with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Tschumperlin added 11 points while senior Ashlee Senser scored 10 points in her final game.

PaStarr led four Scots in double figures. Johnson added 15 points while Callie PaStarr and Lara Avery each totaled 11.
