Women's basketball falls to St. Catherine

St. Catherine used a 17-2 run midway through the first half to build a 19-point halftime cushion and go on to a 94-65 win over the Pipers Wednesday night in St. Paul, Minn.

The Pipers (12-10, 10-9 in the MIAC) led 14-13 after a Grace Weinreich layup, but the Wildcats (14-8, 11-8) scored the next 14 points as part of the 17-2 run. St. Catherine scored on 6-of-7 possessions during the stretch. Brooke Hakanson hits a pair of three-pointer during the run that gave St. Catherine a 30-16 edge. Hakanson netted 17 points for the contest.

Hamline cut the lead back down to eight before the Wildcats went on another run before the half to lead 45-26.

The Pipers shot 37.5 percent for the contest (21-56) and hit 8-of-24 three-pointers. Sophomore Krystal Tschumperlin scored 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Weinreich added 10 points for the Pipers.

The Wildcats were 31-of-61 shooting from the field (50.8 percent). They converted on 17-of-33 in the first half. St. Catherine also made 23-of-28 free throw attempts. Rachel Berglund led four players in double figures with 21 points. Sarah Schneider chipped in 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The loss put the Pipers a game behind St. Catherine for the final playoff spot with three games left to play. The Wildcats also hold the tiebreaker against the Pipers after sweeping the season series.

Hamline will host Gustavus Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena. Tip off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
